2a. Electro-chemical transmission (this is how neurones communicate with each other) |

The signal from one neurone to another arrives via small specific chemical molecules called neurotransmitters, which cause change in the receiving neurones electrical potential. The neurones maintain a negative (-70 mV) potential that goes positive when excited by neurotransmitter or more negative if an inhibitory transmitter comes along. The normal resting neurone potential is maintained by the ion pump (indeed upto 30 % of our bodily energy is accounted for this process). |
